Start My ReturnYour tax anxiety is justified.
What you don't know can hurt you.
New federal rules mean gig platforms like Uber, DoorDash, and Etsy now report your earnings directly to the CRA — unreported income isn't invisible anymore.
Do you know what you can deduct?
Billions in tax credits and deductions go unclaimed by Canadians every single year. With over 400 credits and deductions out there, it's easy to miss the ones you're entitled to.
Had to pick up a second income to make ends meet?
You're not alone — 1 in 4 Canadians now earn a secondary income from gig work and side hustles. Earning it is the easy part. Filing it correctly is where things get complicated.
Not totally sure you did it right?
Neither are most people: 67% of young Canadian filers say making a mistake is their #1 tax worry.

Tax questions, answered in plain English.
When is the tax deadline in Canada?
For most Canadians, the deadline to file your 2025 tax return and pay any balance owing is April 30, 2026. If you're self-employed, you have until June 15, 2026 to file — but any taxes you owe are still due by April 30.
How long does it take to get a tax refund in Canada?
Most refunds arrive within about two weeks when you file online and use direct deposit. Paper returns can take up to eight weeks. Filing accurately the first time is the best way to avoid delays — errors and CRA reviews are what slow refunds down.
Do I have to file a tax return if I made little or no money?
It's almost always worth filing, even with little or no income. Filing is how the CRA determines your eligibility for payments like the GST/HST credit and other benefits, lets students carry tuition credits forward, and returns any tax that was withheld from your paycheques.
What happens if I file my taxes late in Canada?
If you owe taxes and file late, the CRA charges a late-filing penalty of 5% of your balance owing plus 1% for each month you're late, with interest on top. If you're owed a refund, there's no penalty — but benefit payments can be interrupted. File on time even if you can't pay in full right away.
Do I have to report DoorDash, Uber, or Etsy income to the CRA?
Yes — all gig and platform income must be reported to the CRA. Under federal reporting rules, digital platforms now send user earnings directly to the CRA, so it already knows about your income. Reporting it properly also lets you claim eligible business expenses, which lowers what you owe.
How is cryptocurrency taxed in Canada?
Crypto is generally taxed as a capital gain: when you sell, trade, or spend it, 50% of your net gain is added to your taxable income, calculated from your Adjusted Cost Base (ACB). Even crypto-to-crypto trades count. NextGen specialists handle multi-trade crypto reporting so your return is accurate and CRA-compliant.
What documents do I need to file my taxes in Canada?
Most filers need income slips (T4, T4A), plus any tuition forms (T2202), RRSP or FHSA contribution receipts, investment summaries, and gig platform statements. Your exact list depends on your situation — our free Tax Checklist tells you in about two minutes.
How much does it cost to file taxes with a tax specialist in Canada?
Costs vary with the complexity of your return — a student return costs less than a self-employed one with investments. At NextGen Taxes, you see your exact price on our Pricing page before you start, and it holds as long as your selections match your situation. You pay only when you approve your completed return.
How long does it take to file with NextGen Taxes?
About five minutes of simple online forms to tell us your situation. After that, your dedicated tax specialist takes over — reaching out by email, text, WhatsApp, or phone (your choice), preparing your return, and filing it once you approve.
Is my personal information secure?
Yes — your documents are uploaded through an encrypted, secure portal and are only accessible to you and your assigned tax specialist. Your data is never sold or shared, and it's stored in Canada.
